Do you know that each student with a NetID at UW has a 300MB web storage that they can use without paying an extra penny? Do you know you can get access to your student H:\ drive from your personal computer? Do you know that students are eligible for virtual desktop access from any computer you choose? If you answer "no" to any of the questions above, then you might want to read on.

Web Publishing

All UW students, even RSOs with a UW NetID are eligible for web publishing on the central UW servers (students.washington.edu). This allows students to create their own website, including blogs, wikis even a MySQL database server.

Before you can setup your own website, the web publishing service must be activated through your UW NetID resource management page.

Step 1:  Go to the following website:

https://uwnetid.washington.edu/manage/?service

Step 2: Check the "Student Web Publishing" under "Inactive Services" and click "Subscribe."

Step 3: Click "finish" if you agree with the policy.

Step 4: Your web site has been setup once you see the following page. Now, you can go ahead and modify your personal website.

Tips for Web Publishing

You can access your website though some SFTP and FTP clients, like WinSCP which is free software. Enter dante.u.washington.edu for the host name, your UW NetID for user name, and your MyUW password for password.

You can install a MySQL server as well, for more information, please visit:     https://www.washington.edu/itconnect/web/publishing/mysql.html

Remote file access (RFA)

Remote file access is a service that is provided by UW Tacoma Information Technology, it allows you to access your personal (H:\ drive) and shared (S:\ drive) files from your personal computer. You can open your files, edit them and then save them back to your UW Tacoma storage space even when you are not on campus. This can be handy when you forget to bring your flash drive back to campus.

Here is a step-by-step tutorial for Windows 7:

Step 1: Click "Computer" from your desktop or start menu then click the "Map Network Drive" button.

Step 2: Choose  a  letter  for your personal drive connection. Enter the following link for the folders, then click  "finish."

For your personal H drive folder, type:

https://sturfa.tacoma.washington.edu/Stu-H-drive/  yourUWNetID (replace "yourUWNetID" with your UW NetID).

To access the share (‘_lab  temp') folder, type:

https://sturfa.tacoma.washington.edu/Stu-S-drive

Step 3:  Login to the server with the following information. The user name would be uwnetid@tacoma.uw.edu, and the password would be your MyUW password.

Virtual Desktop Access (ViDA)

ViDA (Virtual Desktop Access) gives UW Tacoma students 24/7 remote access via a virtual desktop to high-end software (Adobe products such as InDesign, Photoshop etc.) which are normally available only in the media lab on campus. ViDA allows students to access the software from their personal computer even off campus.

Step 1: Go to the following website, then click ViDA login:  http://www.washington.edu/lst/vida

Step 2: Install the Citirix software

Step 3: Login with your UW NetID and password.

Step 4: Done! Now you can use those Adobe software from the virtual desktop.
