                             Candidates for President

                                                 Joseph Franco

Why have you decided to run for office?

I am running for office to serve our students and protect their interests through representing their voice and enacting reforms on their behalf. I believe that my experiences so far in Student Affairs and Student Involvement through various Registered Student Organizations and the Asian-Pacific Islander Student Union on campus has prepared me to understand student concerns and empower me to make a difference in our student government.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

As Student Leader of the Year in 2010-2011, I've served on various ASUWT committees during my three years at UW Tacoma, including Legislative Affairs and Initiatives and Concerns. This year I am on the Diversity Task Force, a Peer Adviser to freshmen, and the Student Transportation Coordinator, I was the President of the Asian-Pacific Islander Student Union last year and this year I am their Student Advisor. I have also been involved with Unity to collaborate with Registered Student Organizations.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

I care about the students' voice. I am passionate about improving the student experience at UW Tacoma. I believe in going out to the students and seeking their perspectives and concerns; I'm not going to wait for them to come to me. I want to represent their opinion on the issues that matter to them, and I am going to collaborate heavily with others on campus to create new solutions. I am committed to attending student events and supporting our Registered Student Organizations.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

In order to balance my time, I will make reasonable assessments of my workload and only accept new commitments if they do not compromise my ability to serve the students to my fullest capacity. I plan to make the student choice one of my top priorities and I will structure my academic load, my social life and my family life to allow me to fulfill my duties as ASUWT president.

                                                 Jonathan Girmatzion

Why have you decided to run for office?

I have decided to run for office in order to become a better resource and ally for students, to be more involved and informed as to the campus and higher education happenings to voice the student's position more thoroughly, also to build on my leadership skills.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

I previously held the position of Legislative Affairs Officer/Committee Chair where I chaired the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Community Outreach Guide for the Student Club Center, and the Services and Activities/Universal Technology Fee Board Club Center Representative in which we completed budget allocations for 23 departments at nearly $790,000 to support student's needs.

I've presided over the Black Student Union (BSU) where we created a connection with BSUs state wide, became the first BSU associated with Nationals in the state and Co-led a team in rebuilding a local community center's playground. I created and presided over Students For Sustainability (SFS) where we worked on informing students with energy efficient networks and informational sessions. I left both groups with capable predecessors.

I held multiple positions working close with students, staff, faculty, and administration by sitting and being vocal on multiple boards and committees, and throughout my positions in student leadership I have encouraged and supported all students to get somewhat involved or at least be aware of what goes on, on their campuses.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

I really want students to know that I like to help people and am interested in learning and experiencing new things. This provides me with the versatility I believe is needed in any position in order to make decisions without a negative or single sided bias.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

Being that I've held multiple positions in the past most of which with minimal training and flourished, I believe that with the summer training and my past experience I will have ample time to organize my schedule according to the positions set agenda, giving me leverage when assessing any unexpected occurrences. As Van Gogh said "Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together", so taking from that I plan to plan for the worst while working on being the best.

                                                          Elizabeth Pierini

Why have you decided to run for office?

After working for ASUWT for the last year I have meticulously took the time to understand every facet of the President's position. I understand the depth and breadth of this position. Combined with my passion to serve the students, I feel I am the most qualified candidate for this position.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

As a Peer Adviser and ASUWT Public Relations Senator I have provided students with programs such as Healthy Husky Hearts, Alternative Transportation video, Stop By, Say Hi, Open Public Forums, Hood Corridor, Husky on the Hill and much more. I have also attended SAFC and Board of Regents meetings representing the students.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

I have taken the last year as a senator to provide students with the best possible resources so they can thrive at UWT. As both a Peer Adviser and Public Relation Senator, I have taken my role seriously with the students I serve as my guide. And I believe I can move ASUWT to the future.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

As a commuter student and an ASUWT official, I understand the necessity to manage time. Serving as a Peer Adviser and an ASUWT official, I have worked for two years as a student leader an still kept up quarterly dean's list grades. I continue to hold my high standard of productivity and serving the students.

Why have you decided to run for office?

As a commuter student, Senator and three-year full-time student on this campus, I know what issues and concerns many students face day-to-day. Being Vice President will allow me to address many of those issues and concerns and allow me to work closely with the Senators to help find the solutions.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

I have been a student on the UWT campus for three years, served as a student leader (Peer Adviser, Senator), served on different committees representing the student population, am knowledgeable about the UWT community, and have worked extensively with faculty and staff.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

I am very organized, persistent and not afraid to voice my opinion. I'm also enthusiastic and passionate about making a difference, and I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to represent you.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

Having worked two different jobs, a full course load, and a personal life all at one time, I have learned effective time management skills. I will continue to use those skills during my term as Vice President in ASUWT.

                                            Nikolas Ahkiong

Why have you decided to run for office?

I decided to run for office because I felt that there was something missing in regards to the inclusiveness of Student Government. I wanted students to be aware of everything that was happening with these paid positions and I feel that we can do a better job next year. My passion is for students to have as much say as possible when it comes to making decisions on our campus.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

I am currently an ASUWT senator and have been in office for one year. My experience also comes from my involvement with Registered Student Organizations, as a member of a student organization, I feel this would help gain insight into the changes that I, as a student, would want to see on campus.

What I really want students to know about me is........

I want students to know that I am not going to be that suit and tie kind of guy that will put on this business like persona just so I would gain your vote. I want students to know that I am a student first.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

Balancing out my life will be challenging, yesBut, I am taking this position on for a reason and must accept the sacrifices that must be made. Putting nothing less than my full felt heart and mind  into this process is an expectation that I should adhere to.

                         Candidates for Senate

                                           Kelly Mooney

Why have you decided to run for office?

Since starting at UWT in 2010, I have been passionate about advocating for students' rights. My first year was focused on other endeavors outside of student government such as: GALA President and serving as a member on the Services and Activities Committee (SAFC). This academic school year 2011-2012 I have had the pleasure to serve as an ASUWT Senator and Initiatives & Concerns (ICC) Co-chair. This year has been amazing and I would like to continue the projects and work that I have done this year.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

Having the experience of working in business prior to my attendance here at UWT has given me the opportunity to understand business, government, and need for community involvement and community voice. I have been in management and a leadership position for over 10 years in the professional world, while maintaining my ability to see the big picture. I understand the needs of the students through close examination of surveys from the past six years, personal conversations with many students, staff, and faculty, and through my position on the SAFC in 2010-2011 and as an ASUWT Senator this year.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

My passion and commitment to UWT is the most important thing students should know about me. I have been here for almost two years; in that time I served the students in numerous capacities. Most importantly, I feel I have sought out opportunities to get the students' voice heard and have accomplished all I have planned to so far as an ASUWT Senator this year. I still have lots planned for spring quarter, so keep your eyes out!

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

I have found a very nice balance as it is in my academic load and extracurricular activities in school. The most important thing that remains is my balance between work, school, and life. I do not have any children as of yet, so I do not have that need to stay at home and devote a lot of time to my child. My personality serves as the necessary factor in this equation. I am a very balanced person as it is, so an added responsibility of senator position will not interfere with my personal well-being either. I will be able to serve the students with a limited amount of stress. This year has been amazing and I am applying for the same position so I know it will not be a problem!

                                           Akua Asare-Konadu

Why have you decided to run for office?

This year I was fortunate enough to be elected into Senate. Throughout this year, I was able to gain a new perspective in higher education and the meaning of advocacy. I learned alot by being a part of ASUWT, and have had a chance to contribute to students. The committee I was a co-chair of successfully ran a postcard campaign in order to address the threat of further funding cuts for financial aid. In our efforts, we were able to gain the support of almost 10% of the student's population, who submitted personal stories of how financial aid cuts would affect their education. Since legislators had been asking to hear students' opinions directly, I consider this a major accomplishment. I have a growing passion to help students. I want to come back and keep building on the foundation we started last year.

What experience and qualifications do you have?

The positions I've held this year were: BSU-PR and Legislative Affairs Co-Chair.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

I have a passion for helping students, I believe in collaboration and innovation, and am constantly looking for problems to address and the question of "how does this benefit students." I also enjoy random conversation and love meeting new people, on or off-campus.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

The college experience as a whole is a time to "find yourself" as a person, and understand what you can adequately handle and manage. To find balance within my life, I plan on working diligently in prioritizing my priorities and minimalizing my distractions. First and foremost, I am a student, just like many of you and am concerned with my performance in the classroom. It is important to spend time with my family as they are my support base, and in my free time I'll be socializing with my friends and catching up on good books to read.

                                            Justin Shrier

Why have you decided to run for office?

I want to run for office because I want to make a positive change for the students. I enjoy listening to others and I can act as their voice on behalf of any issues and concerns they have. I want ASUWT to be an even more welcoming and friendly place for students.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

While I have never led in student governance, I have been in many comparable leadership positions. In church, I have led junior and high school students to help them develop their faith. I have also been a work site coordinator for my church's summer mission.

What I really want students to know about me is.....

I am a student first and always will be. I love being a student at UWT and I look forward to coming here every day. I love it here because of the welcoming students, staff, and faculty. This will be a new experience for me so I can help bring a new perspective to ASUWT and improve our welcoming hands.

Describe how you plan to balance your duties with ASUWT with your current academic load, social life, family life, etc.

This School Year I have participated for many hours with our ASUWT office at events like Huskies on the Hill and the Fall and Winter OPF's. In this time I have successfully held a 3.6 cumulative GPA, making the dean's list my first two quarters here at UWT, as well as obtaining over 200 hours of Community Service with various organizations in my Community. My ability to work for ASUWT will not be affected by these other commitments and I will continue to prioritize both my social and family life with this large commitment to ASUWT, and work effectively for the students at UW-Tacoma.

                                                    Tyler Bjork

Why have you decided to run for office?

I want to be able to become a voice for students, gaining a better understanding of what students want/need as we grow over these coming years. As a PR Committee Member, I have just begun to understand what students want from their representatives, and would like to continue listening, making their UWT experience impactful.

What experiences and qualifications do you have?

I have attended various events like Huskies on the Hill and staffed a table for ASUWT at Winter OPF. Along with working on the ASUWT PR committee, I have worked with other organizations outside of school including Special Olympics Washington and would like to continue in a Leadership role as a voice for students at UW-Tacoma.

What I really want students to know about me is......

I am a hard worker and worked as a Public Relations Committee Member for the past School Year. My commitment to understanding what students want from their school is very important to me and I would love to continue as a representative for students, making the UWT experience more Impactful.
