The red carpet was the place to be Friday night at the Longshoreman's Hall, for the O.S.C.A.R.S. - or "Outstanding Student Ceremony for Awards and Recognition" celebration.
Catered by Snuffins and Celebrity Cake Studio for desserts, the evening started off with good food and mingling before entertainment and awards.
Wil Johnson, ASUWT President and Student Leader of the Year nominee, was more excited than last year for the annual event.
"I was really able to see the direction of the event this time around," Johnson commented.
Senior Tavor Yisrael, made the most of the evening and went home with not one but two awards - as did Student Leader of the Year winner Kiko Salas.
"I was very honored - and shocked - to receive two awards," Yisrael said. "As I said on stage, I honestly thought that Kate Bigbee would receive the award for the Association of Future Leaders." Yisrael joked about assuming she wouldn't win, which led to her "sentence-long acceptance speech."
A nominee for Student Leader of the Year, sophomore Gerald Omar Ongoco was impressed with all of the nominees this year.
"All of the nominees have done great things for this campus," Ongoco said. "I'm up against some very high-class competitors for this award."
The awards for all of the student organizations on campus were higher in numbers than any other year, with a record-setting 30 registered organizations on University of Washington Tacoma's campus this year.
Comedian Eric O'Shea, who emceed the event, joked with audience about UWT security guards and made plenty of bathroom humor wisecracks. His impersonation of Student Leader of the Year award recipient Kiko Salas had the audience cracking up, especially Salas.
Chancellor Patricia Spakes won the President's Award for Excellence in Leadership and Service, Alicia Porter won Dedicated Volunteer Award, and the Student Activities Board won Organization of the Year. Yisrael Salas and Star Murray each won more than one award at the O.S.C.A.R.s
The awards ceremony was followed by a less-attended, but equally entertaining dance. The DJ, Melody Music, played some old-school tracks as well as newer chart toppers for students who remained for the late-night portion of the event. After all was said and done, the 5th O.S.C.A.R.'s were a hit, and students and faculty alike seemed excited to come back next year for the red carpet event.
