The candidates for next year's student senate met last week in the oUWTpost to discuss their goals and to hear students' thoughts. The candidates for Associated Students of University of Washington Tacoma kept their statements brief and to the point. Topics of discussion included community, school spirit, parking, non-traditional students, facilities, and alternative transportation. In the opening statements, each candidate raised issues they found relevant to the election.

"My passion is this college," Jordan Shaver, a candidate for ASUWT president, said. She brought up her experience as vice president of the Marketing Society.

According to Tommy Bauer, a sophomore running for ASUWT president, "We have a chance here to lay a strong foundation" for a four-year university. He spoke of issues relating to facility access and hours, citing the need for people to be able to study at the library on weekends.

I want to restructure the student government to create a judicial branch," Jonathan Long, a junior in Politics and Values and a candidate for vice president, declared. He also noted that by spreading information more easily, students would know what the student government is doing.

Dawna Bryant, a junior in Social Welfare also running for president, focused on the need for communication "to build stronger relationships throughout the community."

Emmi Buck, a transfer student from San Diego running for vice president, described herself as "very organized and honest." She emphasized that more school spirit, more purple and gold colors, should be apparent around campus. "I'm here because I want to be your voice," Buck said.

"Student government has done a lot this year, but I'm ready to take it to the next level," Cruz Credle, sophomore and current senator, said. Vying for the vice president position, Credle called for a change in senate meeting times. He emphasized, as Bauer did, his involvement in the first freshman class of UWT.
