Valentine's Day is fast approaching and while many may be looking forward to goofy cards and chocolate hearts, Feb.
14 means more than a Hallmark moment to Adrienne Arnold.
Arnold is the Math, Science and Leadership Coordinator for the Institute of Technology at the University of Washington Tacoma. Although much of her time is spent on campus, she is currently giving some time to a good cause.
Over the past four weeks, Arnold has been gearing up for a fundraiser to support domestic violence awareness in Pierce County by acting in a play.
Valentine's Day is also known as V-Day, a worldwide movement to end violence against women. For the third year in a row, Tacoma is producing a performance of the "Vagina Monologues," the off-Broadway play that inspired the founding of V-Day. You'll be able to see Arnold support a good cause and show off her acting talents at this event.
Auditioning for the play on a whim,Anold was surprised to be offered a speaking role in a portion of the play called "Outrageous Fact." She also plays a part in a piece discussing transgender.
Although she has never acted before, Arnold says her adventurous side compels her to try new things.
"It's always good in life for someone to step outside of their comfort zone," Arnold said.
When Arnold is not testing her acting skills on stage, she devotes her time to making contacts in the community and working with local schools to get children involved not only in learning about math, science and leadership.
Arnold has taken an interest in being part of a project that is both shocking and entertaining. She says the "Vagina Monologues" play honors women who have survived violence and raises money for agencies that help women get out of violent situations.
The volunteer cast has been meeting twice a week for rehearsals, setting up scenery and spreading the word to help sell "Vagina Monologues" tickets.
