- be proactive in your giving. Instead of giving out of emotional reaction or to the first organization that asks for a donation, consider the cause and mission of the organization. Give to a group that advances a cause you are passionate about.
- Hang up the phone, eliminate the middleman. Never donate money over the phone. A high percentage of money received through telemarketing companies goes to the company instead of the
organization the telemarketing company is raising money for. - Be careful of impostors and soundalike names. Often, organizations have similar names, but operate very differently. Be careful to make sure you are donating to the right organization.
- Confirm 501(c)3 status. Avoid putting money in canisters or to people on the street,
who may be scam artists. If an organization has 501(c)3 Status, it is a legitimate nonprofit organization. - Concentrate your giving. Instead of donating to numerous organizations, focus your giving on one organization you support. You will receive less mail in your mailbox and your money can be more effective in advancing the organization's goal.
