The Huskies on the University of Washington Tacoma’s soccer team might come from different backgrounds, but when they take the field they play together for the love of the game.
For the players, the team provides the chance to get to know other students while having a great time. “I love soccer,” senior Kim Locke said. “I just wish more people would come out [to play].”
The soccer team operates under the newly-formed UWT Sports Club, which provides students, staff and faculty the opportunity to participate in non-academic sports activities outside of school, Darren Bailey said. Bailey, a UWT security officer, serves as faculty adviser for the organization.
Student Mark Kruidhof is a transfer student from the Netherlands who joined the team after hearing about it from Bailey. “I really like it,” he said.
The UWT soccer team has existed in one form or another for about four years, Bailey said, adding that interest started falling off in the past few years. Senior Marti Curtis requested funds from the Student Activities Board to start a sports organization on campus during its winter funding cycle, according to SAB documents.
There are roughly 20 – 30 players who play on two different leagues. The Huskies are currently ranked 2-1. Students and alumni pay $10 for the season, or they may drop in for $5 per game. Members of the public are able to play at a cost of $65 for the season.
There are a number of games left in the season for those interested in either attending or playing. The student team will face off against the faculty team on April 22 at 2:30 at the Soccer Center located at 2610 Bay St. East in Tacoma.
