Student Government approved of a recommendation by the Personnel Committees to place senators Chris Karnes and Heather Manske on a probationary period for winter quarter at the Jan. 19 meeting.

Both senators fell below the 2.50 GPA requirement, outlined in Section 3, Subsection I of the Student Government Bylaws. The committee recommended this action be taken so that both Karnes and Manske could continue to serve out their terms.

There was a brief discussion concerning the proper procedure be created for persons whose grades have slipped the previous quarter, since this can be the result of a number of factors. Although Karnes reason wasn’t clearly outlined in the meeting, Manske’s GPA was the result of a technical error by her advisor.

As it currently stands in the Student Government Constitution, anyone in direct violation of the requirements outlined in the Bylaws, which the GPA requirement is one of them, they are in danger of being impeached.

By approving the recommendation, both Karnes and Manske have this quarter to bring their averages back to the 2.5 GPA requirement or face impeachment hearings in Spring Quarter.

This has also established the groundwork for Student Government to address the issue once again on a later date.

In other business:

Student Government approved of a measure that would allow current Senator Mary Monroe to become the office assistant and voting member on the Services and Activities Fee Committee. Upon approval by University of Washington Tacoma Chancellor Patricia Spakes, Senator Monroe will have to give up her current position on Student Government.

The following committee reports for Autumn Quarter were approved at the Jan. 5 meeting: President Bubb’s State of the Senate Quarterly Report, Student Technology Fee Committee, Personnel Committee, Student Campus Enhancement Committee, Legislative Affairs Committee, Election Administration Committee, and Graduation Committee.
