What: "The Last King of Scotland."
2006. (R). Some strong
violence and gruesome images,
sexual content and language.
Where: The Grand Tacoma;
Pacific Place, Seattle.
Who: Forest Whitaker (Idi
Amin), James McAvoy (Nicolas
Garrigan), Kerry Washington
(Kay Amin), Gillian Anderson
(Sarah Merrit)
Why: A film that may restore
moviegoers' faith in the medium;
a reason not to see "The
Grudge 2" (if you needed any
reason).
The Review: Set in the early
1970s, the film follows young
and fun-loving Doctor Nicolas
Garrigan as he heads from his
native Scotland to Uganda (it's
in Africa). Reason: To serve the
poor. What seems like bad news
- he's arrived in the middle of
a military coup - actually has
a silver lining for Garrigan. He
is befriended by newly-installed
Ugandan President Idi Amin.
Amin is charismatic and friendly.
Garrigan accepts a job as
Amin's personal doctor. However,
Amin is not what he seems
- turning from gentle patriarch
of the country into a paranoid,
bloodthirsty tyrant.
Best line: "You must leave and
tell the world of Amin. They will
believe you because you are a
white man."
The good: Forest Whitaker. If
there's no Oscar nomination,
I'm moving to Uganda.
The bad: There's little here not
to like.
