Noisy hammering, sawing, drilling, work trucks driving in and out.
The on-going construction work at the Court 17 garage and apartments are a now familiar sight and sound for most of the campus.
Until recently the Court 17 garage and apartments has been reported as being fully operational by fall 2006, but the apartments have been delayed.
"The project is on schedule for December 2006 occupancy," said Milt Tremblay, UWT Director of Facilities and Campus Services.
The apartments will be open to university students, faculty, staff and the general public. No subsidies will be provided to students for living at the market-rate Court 17, but they will receive priority for renting the units.
There will be five levels with 128 units. Fifty units will be studios that have a private bedroom area separate from the living area. Thirty-nine units will be one bedroom and another 39 will be two bedrooms.
The prices vary with how much space each apartment has and on what side of the building it is located, as some will have views.
The studios have between 517-570 square feet, ranging in price from $875-900. The one bedroom has 586-676 square feet, ranging in price from $950-1050. The two bedrooms have 923-1016 square feet, ranging in price from $1350-1475.
All of the apartments have washers and dryers and kitchen appliances, such as, refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens and microwaves.
Common areas include an exercise room, business center and social room with a full kitchen.
Other apartments within walking distance include the Harmon Lofts, located at 1944 Pacific Avenue.
The Harmon Lofts offers one bedroom apartments with 750-1200 square feet for $995-1395 and two bedrooms with 1200 square feet for $1325-1450.
They also include washers and dryers in every unit and have an exercise room.
Right across the street from campus are the Hunt Mottet Lofts, located at 2125 Commerce Street, Suite 200.
The Hunt Mottet Lofts only has one bedroom apartments with 1200-1350 square feet for $1495-1995. They include a den that could potentially be turned into a second bedroom for those looking to split the bill.
These apartments have euro-style washer combo dryer hookups in the apartments and also have laundry facilities for tenants who don't have their own or are unwilling to rent one from the management.
"We have fireplaces in every unit and there is a rooftop deck for anyone looking to read a book in the sun," said Cindy Miller, Hunt Mottet Lofts manager.
All apartments located near campus usually have a view from at least one side, so that makes prices go up.

"Student Housing" at those prices???? How many students could afford that? Why isn't the University helping to provide AFFORDABLE housing in the local area?
