New resource available for cutting textbook costs
University of Washington, Tacoma students now have one more option to help cut rising textbook costs. Developed by Noah Schmidt, UWT senior and student senator, the used textbook board in the Mattress Factory building offers free advertisement for students wishing to sell their used books. Located in the first floor corridor, the board comes complete with its own supply of paper slips and thumbtacks to post ads.
The fight for reasonable textbook prices isn't a new campaign for Schmidt: Last year, he took on the issue of rising prices by holding meetings with UWT faculty, administration, students, University Book Store employees and the company's CEO.
Campus environmental cleaunup underway
The Tacoma Aroma just wafted a bit too close to home. Here's a wrap-up, just in case you've missed the editorial in the Tacoma News Tribune, the front page story in Tacoma Weekly or the numerous articles all over the stinkin' place:
· UWT is located on top of leaking vats of petroleum and possibly other slimy substances.
· We knew this when we moved in.
· We signed an agreement with the EPA to take responsibility for the cleanup.
· That cleanup will cost at least $6.4 million.
And there's more (the other articles didn't include this):
· That $6.4 million cleanup coincides, much to UWT's chagrin, with the start of a $5 million capital campaign to raise money for the Assembly Hall.
· "Legacy Donors" are usually a bit hesitant to hand over seven-figure donations to projects located on top of leaking vats of petroleum, located downhill from god-knows how much non point source pollution (two "plumes" have been identified thus far).
Stay tuned to the Ledger for more on this throughout the year. Full story here: http://www.tacomaweekly.com/_story.php?q=2100&p=20
