People and stories often neglected by mainstream media are the focus of Brandon Waltz' Around the World, on exhibit beginning March 13 in the UW Tacoma Gallery.

Creating his own movie stills of fictitious films, Waltz incorporates his vision for an inclusive cinematography that values diversity of culture and story. Around the World is his first solo exhibition. An artist's reception will be held Friday, March 17, from 6-8 p.m.

The UW Tacoma graduate, who now lives in Boston, says his artwork is informed by his love of cartoons, pop culture and the world around him. Through digital technology, Waltz uses rich colors and simplified shapes to mimic animation and give visibility to the distortion and glamorization often used in entertainment.

Around the World places diversity into the visible world of pop culture, and at the same time, reminds viewers that this world is just a false exaggeration of reality.

The UWT Gallery, located at 1742 Pacific Ave, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m., and Fridays from 1-5 p.m.
