Choices. We make them everyday. Attending classes at the University of Washington, Tacoma, is a choice made by each student attending the college.
Completing all homework and reading assignments in a timely manner is a wise choice for students to make. Paying $103 in each quarter is not a choice by students attending UWT. It is a mandatory fee set forth by State law.
According to the revised code of Washington State (RCW), all universities operating in the state charge a student activities fee. Students enrolled for the autumn quarter of 2005-06 academic year at UWT will each be charged $103.
This amount will be billed to full-time students for each quarter they enroll at the university, including summer quarter.
RCW 28B.15.041 loosely defines how each university will use the money. The RCW also mandates that a Student Services and Activities Fee Committee (SAFC) be formed to review all requests for funding by student organizations and departments.
The SAFC will also recommend program priorities and budget levels, and serve as an advisory to the chancellor of the campus.
Mandated by Washington state law, the SAFC will include seven voting members, a primary and secondary alternate member, and four non-voting ex officio members. An ex officio member works much like a professional consultant. An ex officio member is appointed to the committee by virtue of their professional knowledge.
The voting and alternate members will be students at-large attending university classes. The ex officio members by law will include the presiding student president of the Associated Students of the University of Washington, Tacoma (ASUWT), a staff employee from student affairs and a staff employee from the office of vice-chancellor for finance and administration.
The fourth ex officio member will be a faculty member of the campus recommended by the faculty assembly.
This year, student Marti Curtis, studying in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (IAS) program, is one of the voting members. An ex-officio member is Student Life Manager Shellie Jo Enscoe.
Addressing the many concerns of the SAFC, Enscoe said that "allocating funds that serve both the short and long-term goals and needs of the students of UW Tacoma" is an important concern of the still-forming committee.
For Enscoe, an important need that the SAFC should meet is "to provide training, advice and guidance to the members of the SAFC as they navigate through the SAF process."
Appointed in July, voting member Curtis said, "I would say that for the mission of this year's SAFC team, we are committed to making sure that students are aware of what is happening on the committee, the purpose of the committee, and ensuring that we follow our roles of being true to the student body and UWT community."
"I chose to apply for this position because I felt I had the experience and knew that I had the heart to find out what our students want, and would ensure that their voices are heard," Curtis said, addressing the reason why she chose to run as an SAFC voting member.
The SAFC "allocates funds that serve both the short and long term goals and needs of the students of UW Tacoma," Enscoe said.
