Every year, the university recognizes two staff members for their outstanding contributions to the campus with the UWT Distinguished Service Award. The UWT Staff Association asks for its nominations in February and the awards are presented as part of the annual Founders Day Awards Ceremony, which will be held May 25.

This year, Kim Davenport, program coordinator for the IAS, and Jessica Roshan, program administrator for the Institute of Technology, have been nominated and selected to receive this prestigious award.

Any UWT faculty, administrator, staff member, or student can nominate someone, but the nomination must address at least one criteria: excellence in job performance, substantially exceeded in quality or quantity the performance expected for the position or assignment, inspirational student service, significant contribution to the UWT mission, exceptional contribution to the off-campus community which may bring credit to UWT or original and innovative resolution of a critical issue.

Michelle Hartman and Karin Dalesky of the IAS program nominated Kim Davenport for the Distinguished Staff Award because of her unwavering work ethic, approachable disposition, and willingness to assist anyone. Admired for being dependable and reliable, her pleasant demeanor, advanced technological skills, and "ready for anything" attitude made her shine above the other nominees.

Davenport started working at UWT in 1999 as a program assistant with the Education Program. In 2003, she moved to her current position as Program Coordinator with the IAS. When not at the UWT, Davenport is an avid pianist, pursuing her musical career with performing and recording activities around Tacoma. She just finished recording her first solo CD which will be released later this year.

"It is a great honor to be nominated, and especially to win, because the selections are made by a committee of my peers, said Davenport. "I have always enjoyed working at UWT and it was a great honor for my work to be recognized in this special way."

Jessica Roshan also has had an extensive career at UWT, starting as a student and working hard to receive a 3.95 cumulative GPA by the time she graduated in 1999. Although she started work as an hourly employee at the university in 1998 while still attending school, Roshan has since worked her way up and is now the program administrator for the Computing and Software Systems.
