Susan Markel, a member of the SEC, was impressed by the quality of the conference and hope to see more of them in the future.

The first in what is expected to be annual conferences, included prominent speakers from the private sector as well as from regulatory and Federal agencies.

The conference was highlighted by presentations from Michael Crooch, board member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, Susan Markel, Chief Accountant, Division of Enforcement, Securities and Exchange Commission, and Greg Scates, Associate Chief Auditor, Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

The presentations also dealt with topics of critical interest to financial executives of public companies and the accountants that audit their financial statements.

"I thought this audience was incredibly attentive and had some great questions. I think we ought to continue doing these types of events to continue to improve the quality of financial reporting," said Markel.
Important topics included share based compensation, revenue recognition, financial fraud, and reporting on internal controls over financial reporting.

Crooch was enthusiastic about the conference. "I really had a good time, I firmly believe that accounting doesn't have to be serious all the time. If you try, it can in fact be fun and exciting to talk about. So that's what I try to do. I try getting things across without them being dry."

The panel format facilitated discussion and comments that dealt with frank, and at times pointed, questions from the participants.

"This is a great event for this area. I definitely look forward to coming again. It's so important for people to get to hear directly from the standard setters themselves," said Scates.

Speakers and participants praised the sessions and the convenient setting of the conference that usually requires financial executives to travel great distances to get the quality of speakers and perspectives that marked each session.
