When Professor Bill Kunz tells his students, "To learn to write, you must write and write and write. Then write some more," he says, speaking from years of journalistic experience.
Bill in particular brings with him great enthusiasm about working with students and a remarkable record of successful work in the industry of broadcast journalism," said Dr. Bill Richardson, director and professor of the IAS program.
"I really enjoy that he brings real life experiences into the classroom," said Luci Stafford, an IAS student with a mass communications concentration.
Kunz understands that to be a quality writer, you have to be prepared. The writing process is important.
"If you skip steps, the final product won't be what it should be," said Kuntz.
Skipping steps is not what Kunz did in his writing career. He earned his B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, his M.S. in Journalism and Communication then his Ph.D. in Communication and Society from the University of Oregon.
Though his background specializes in sports events, his experience has taught him most of TV is about, being entertained.
"TV is audience driven. Whether writing for a news program or a sports program, it is not that different, Kuntz said."
Kunz's library of video clips is vast. From 2000 until he joined UWT faculty this quarter, he was the Vice- President and Senior Producer for Turner Sport. He covered events such as the NBA Draft of Yao Ming and broadcast production of the 2001 Goodwill Games in Austria.
Kuntz teaches Writing for Television and Political Economy for Mass Media.
With a rich journalistic background that spans over 20 years and includes many facets of the journalism world, Kunz is an invaluable addition to the IAS department's communications concentration.
"He is a terrific addition to our faculty and our campus," said Richardson.
"He will make a great contribution to the growth of the communication concentration and to the expansion of our campus offering in general."
