Clear your February calendar and find your dusty Mardi Gras beads because ASUWT is hosting Fat Friday, a newer version of the usual Winter Ball.
“We chose the Mardi Gras theme because it is fun and festive,” Tara Farquhar, Director of Events and Programming, ASUWT said. “Hopefully this theme will attract more attention from the student body, therefore increasing attendance.”
Fat Friday will take place at the Landmark Convention Center on Feb. 21 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Ticket costs are $10 for single and $16 for couples. This year the tickets can be purchased to the cashier’s office or at the ASUWT tables for the event.
“The dress code is ‘extravagant.’ Though people wearing jeans, tennis shoes and t-shirts will be entirely too underdressed, a ball gown and tux are not required. Students are invited to dress up in full costume. I know that a lot of people at the university are struggling and most people don’t want to spend $200 on a dress or $50 to rent a tux. However, I believe most attendees will be wearing suits and semi-formal dresses,” Farquhar said.
“This year I wanted to put on an event that students want to be at,” Farquhar said. “I also want to make it so students are unable to find excuses to not attend. For example, I have made the ticket price cheaper and not required semi-formal, but extravagant attire, which can be much less costly.”
Last year there were complaints voiced by the student body about the money spent. Low attendance, lack of planning and the high cost to get in were also on top of the list. Total expenditures for last year were around $14,500 of and the ticket cost was $25. This year ASUWT is spending around $12,000 for Fat Friday and dropped the ticket price to $16. The money to pay for this event and the other events put on by ASUWT comes from the Services and Activities fee that is incorporated into student’s tuition every quarter.
