The growing community of DuPont has a new neighbor, whose sights are set on making the area, if not the nation, more safe.

New Definitions Inc., a management and consulting firm, will soon occupy most of the first floor of the DuPont Better Business Bureau complex after moving its operations from University Place.

With an emphasis in support services to the United States Department of Defense, the company has joined the national effort to develop programs aimed at fortifying homeland security.

The relocation brings NDI closer to one of its primary clients, Fort Lewis, and gives provides I-5 access and visibility. The company will relocate from its current location to the BBB building in late December.

Founded in 1994, the firm employs a number of retired military officers and brings their experience in national security affairs not always found in the average engineering, technology or consulting firms. This background has allowed NDI to become involved in projects that deal with new types of threats and terrorism potential, such as biological or chemical weapon attacks on military installations or economic centers.

"The whole question of security has taken a quantum leap," says Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber Manager of Business and Trade Gary Brackett.

This opportunities will continue for local firms like NDI as billions of dollars from homeland security budgets result in a flood of private contracts for businesses that can provide security and emergency planning.

The company's current major project is advising on Boeing's Science Applications International Consulting project awarded by the Army in 2001.

This three-phase contract could total more than $10.2 million. One of 89 Future Combat Systems contracts, the Boeing/ SAIC project is part of what NDI Vice President of Business Development Jerry Schneider describes as a revolution in defense. Currently in development, the project will result in smaller, quicker, more efficient military forces through use of technology and planning. Basically, his team is part of the effort to make the military leaner and more lethal.
