Just across Pacific Avenue from UWT is Anthem, a one of a kind beverage experience. Walking into Anthem you’re instantly greeted not only by the aroma of freshly ground coffee and espresso shots, but the vibrant employees who make Anthem a truly unique establishment.
Serving coffee, tea, ale and wine, there is sure to be a drink to fit everyone’s taste buds.
As for coffee, Anthem uses a Dillano’s roast which is smooth and full of flavor. Espresso shots are poured with perfection as each drink is hand-crafted. Watching the barista and manager Daniel pour shots I couldn’t help but be amazed, each had the most incredible color and crema!
For those who may not know what that means, they are signs of a great shot of espresso. My latte was flawless, the right balance between coffee, flavor and milk.
The atmosphere at Anthem feels like home, inviting and relaxing. I took a seat at the bar where two children were creating chalk drawings on the black board counter top, and one man was putting the finishing touches on his.
Feeling adventurous I joined in trying my hand at chalk art, needless to say I ranked at amateur.
A few minutes later a group of girls walked in one carrying a recent Cutter’s Point coffee. The Anthem challenge was issued. They prepared the exact same drink as Cutter’s Point, a 16oz soy latte, and she compared the two sip for sip. Anthem won, hands down.
Finishing my latte, still not ready to leave, I chatted with Bryan, another employee, about Anthem’s mission. He said they came to downtown Tacoma because of their love for community, being a part of it and helping to build it.
When they saw this location they instantly knew the potential it held and planned to make the most of it. With Anthem they wanted to bring that next level, and third wave, of coffee experience to Tacoma.
When I asked why they also served ale and wine Daniel replied “the employees have a passion for beverages” and wanted to offer something everyone could enjoy, all under one roof.
In addition to a passion for beverages Anthem offers a haven for artists, artists of all types. It’s a place where they can come for inspiration, to work on a piece and share their creativity.
Each Monday an open mic night is held where any and all types of art forms are welcomed and encouraged. On a fun note, the piano near the stage was brought to life through the imagination and creative talents of one of their employees, Tiarra.
And to end this on a wonderful note, Anthem also serves food. I had the best flat bread! I tried their spinach, tomato and parmesan that was a nice balance between flavors and a great option for vegetarians. I also had the pear, bacon and feta with a balsamic drizzle. I was not sure about the combination, but my first bite changed that.
Overall Anthem was an incredible experience and well worth the walk across the street. If you have not checked them out already I highly recommend you do so.
Anthem is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers a 10% discount to all UWT students.
