I came to the end of my lunch hour hunt when a little restaurant nestled in the northern-most tip of Pacific avenue caught my eye. A deep blue umbrella hangs over the front window of the urban cafe. Inside, the atmosphere is airy, with light flushing through large windows, 18-foot ceilings, wood floors, and simple tables scattered throughout the long narrow space. Outside seating is available overlooking Fireman's Park. The location, 701 Pacific Avenue, is about fifteen blocks from campus but a short walk from the Theater District link stop. Sandwiches, salads and soups dominate the menu, making Capers a popular weekday lunch spot for those who work around downtown Tacoma.
The menu was split into six categories; Capers favorites, soup/chili, salads, side salads, sandwiches and hot sandwiches. I recognized the style of this eatery to be "laid back gourmet," with items such as zucchini quesadilla with sunset salad ($9.99), and Dungeness crab casserole also served with the sunset salad ($11.99). Customers are asked to order and pay at the counter prior to being given a number, seated and served. I found this to be tacky considering their prices ranging from about $9-$14 per dish. I finally opted for the Turkey, avocado and Swiss sandwich with a side of macaroni salad for $8.99. The sandwich was served on whole grain bread, the salad was light and delicious. As far as their beverages go, soft drinks are $1.50 and glasses of wine range from $3.50-$6. The Coke I ordered came in a vintage style glass bottle, which added an old school charm to the lunch.
Capers is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is the perfect place for a quick and casual lunch with friends.
